has to be on the table. what we have done is a look at the entire pentagon. this is one section on areas where the pentagon works that has nothing to do with defense. over 10 years, this is about $69 billion. that is a conservative estimate. at the end of world war two, we had 12 million men under arms. we had 2000 black officers in -- and generals. -- we had 2000 black officers and generals. -- flag officers and generals. we almost have been admiral for every ship and the navy. it is not an captain budget is not a captain. it is an admiral. we have looked at areas where we could not necessarily save all the money, but we could transfer responsibilities out of the pentagon and consolidate programs and save a significant amount of money. most of you all have been able to see this report. we highlight a lot of the stupid things are happening. i will highlight one thing. on 16 or 17 basis, we have military-run schools. the average cost to educate a child in the us will per year is $50,000. almost four times what the rest of public education cost. s. on the vast majority of our base

lawrence is at the pentagon. chris, i don't even know where to begin because there's so much to talk about. let's start with general allen. what's the implications of this -- of him being brought in to petraeus scandal and what has he said about it? >> so far, from what we've heard from defense officials, soledad, john allen has denied any wrongdoing in this matter. what is the matter at hand is on sunday the fbi notified the pentagon that they had 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails, which contained inappropriate contact between general john allen, and jill kelley. yesterday, secretary panetta asked that john kelley -- or john allen's nomination to be the head of nato be pulled back and put on hold while the inspector general starts to dig through all of these pages to find out exactly what happened. here's how it all connects. general john allen was stationed in tampa when he was at u.s. central command. so was general david petraeus. jill kelley worked as sort of a social liaison with a lot of the commanders there. in fact, she's been -- won awards for her work with some of the military f

the subject of a pentagon investigation of allegedly inappropriate communications with jill kelley. yes, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will continue in his position as the investigation continues. and all of that as the pentagon digs through 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other communications, many with kelley over a two-year period. >>

embedded was not called that. it fell out of fashion for many years and the military, the pentagon, was not sure what to do with journalists and they would exclude them from certain operations. i think the invasion of panama raised it again because, while it was supposed to have imbedded journalists, it was a fiasco and they were held on the base for many days. that prompted much discussion between the press and the pentagon about what to do for the next conflict. ground rules were agreed upon. in 1991, that is when it was instituted again. the difference in that conflict is it was instituted on a pool basis. camera people, journalists who were embedded with the military were expected to share all of their material with all of the other major outlets. that created a pool operation to handle all of their content. that morphed in the events after 9/11 into an embedded situation that was not pooled. >> when we first heard ramping up to 2003 the afghanistan invasion, the u.s. troops on the special groundwork special forces. it was such a small force. the issue really came up again in 2
